Almost a library card.

It's been a busy week of job hunting and interviewing and landing the job, but I am pleased to finally have summer income as a breakfast server where the hills are alive with the sound music. No joke that's exactly where I'll be working, 6am to noon complete with the Austrian girl's costume. My first day of training was today and it is a very basic server job, but very early. I was surprised at how easy it was for me to get up this morning. Of course it helped that I had napped seven hours yesterday and that the sun comes up around 5am, but still for me to be up so early is impressive. I have a few more days of training before I'm officially on the floor making money, but with town as quiet as it is I am making more money training than I would be serving.

This week I also stopped in at the Stowe Free Library and attempted to get a new library card for the summer. Unfortunately I wasn't able to prove my Stowe address just yet and also wasn't willing to pay ten dollars so I ended up checking out the books under my mother's name until my next piece of mail comes when I can get my own card. I've been fiercely reading the Song of Fire and Ice books (Game of Thrones) by George R.R. Martin, but after finishing the third one I am a bit tired out by the series. Instead of checking out the fourth book I picked out a Vonnegut and a Fitzgerald to keep me entertained in my free time until I'm motivated to crack open the fourth Martin book. Unfortunately it means that I will be falling behind in the book challenge that I have going with the Hebrew Friend, but no matter my heart wasn't in it as much as his.

Be proactive, not reactive.

"Isn't that a yogurt?"
"No stupid, it's what you put on your face."

My family is full of Purnellisms, things we say on a regular basis and most of them happen to come from my dad. One of his more favorites is "be proactive, not reactive." He usually likes to say this to me when I'm procrastinating on a project or when he would drop me off at jazz band and make me find a way into the locked school instead of waiting around for the teacher to arrive and open the doors. When I had to teach a religious class at camp I told the campers this phrase and was met with mixed results including yogurt and face wash. A friend of mine really likes to be proactive too and gets really into people and things that are more reactive. I think that it bothers him that we live in such a lackadaisical society. Right now I want to be proactive about getting my work done, but after working all weekend I could use a nap.

It's been an interesting weekend to say the least. It started with the CO2 tank being stolen from the restaurant. Apparently there's a place on the Black Market for carbonation. It was also the day that I was training to be a bartender and until we figured out what was wrong, every beer that I poured came out horrible and it really got me down. Of course it wasn't until I was out on the floor that we discovered the missing tank. It was terrible, the police came and poor Take Out Boy had to walk down to the grocery store and buy forty bottles of soda. He could barely push the cart back up the slope to the restaurant and into the kitchen. Yesterday I had a profitable day for only having to work during the morning and afternoon and I thought that things were going smoothly until the first dinner rush when one of our cooks said "fuck it," and walked off of the line. Goodbye wildberry Skittles. Today was better. I had my first shift behind the bar and we've started the football pool. It's a $5 buy in that will probably get pushed to $10 once people get involved and we get more organized. I maybe picked two winning teams today. I had the Eagles and the Pittsburgh games on while I was behind the bar and the scores kept flashing at the bottom of the screen and all of my choices were losing. I need to get up on football and start keeping track of teams and stats so that I stop losing more money at work than I make.

I actually like football considering that I barely understand some of the rules. We used to play in gym class and even though I'm terrible at the throwing the ball, I do like to pass it with people every now and then. I used to date a football player in high school and one of my favorite shows is The League, though that really doesn't have much to do with actual football. Either way I have decided to dedicate this season to learning the game and maybe winning some money while I'm at in.

Things should pick up when my arranged marriage comes through.

I've been meaning to write (complain) about this for a while, but it's only now that I've remembered to do it. Have you heard the remix for Adele's Rolling in the Deep? It is terrible. Like really really terrible. It's pretty much a slightly discofied version of the original song. If the producers were really thinking they would have brought Nicki Minaj in. Then it would have been a remix. I told one of my friends that the remix blew, but he adores ADORES Adele, no he's not gay, so it was like talking to the wind.

Sucks right?

Okay, bad song aside, its been a decent, but not too exciting weekend. It's been mostly a work weekend. I can back from vacation in Vermont and found out that my restaurant work schedule was completely messed up. I ended up not being able to work a bunch of the shifts that I was scheduled for because I was already at my other job. So I spent this weekend wheeling and dealing to get the shifts I want and ended up making a decent amount of money considering that the summer has been so slow. I gave up fighting about next weekend though and now I'm not working Friday night. Good thing or bad thing?

This weekend I also learned how to play beer roulette, well roulette in general. I didn't know there was such a thing as beer roulette and neither did anyone at work. One girl did get excited when I explained it to her, exclaiming, "Oh I love drinking games!" I got about two words into explaining the game when she said that so still no one at work knows how to play the game. I will say that it is quite fun, especially because I tend to get reckless when I gamble. I was not playing with money, if I had been I would now be behind in a year's worth of rent from losing so much. Fortunately the currency was beer and since I had no intention of sleeping in their oversized apartment I faked taking sips and then peaced out as soon as it got a little too crazy.

I got out of work earlier than I usually do on Sundays. I opened today so I could get out early and I must say that I don't mind it at all. Losing a few hours in the morning more than makes up for the ones I gain at night. Though now that Neil is gone I have no one to hang out with on Sunday nights :( Instead I used the time to do Yoga Flex from P90X. This workout is a little longer than the others so it helps to have a large chunk of free time so that I'm not rushed and have to cut anything short. I love the yoga on this program because it's fast paced but it's also broken up into two parts: flow and balance. I have decent skill in the flow part because the movements are similar to what I used to do in dance and in skating, but I really excel in the balance poses. Jumping around on thin blades has finally paid off for me.

Same concept.

Now that I have all of this free time I almost don't know what to do with myself. I still have another week before school starts, but until then I'm left with my own devices. I told one of my friends that I was around tonight, but I'm not going to push it. If he wants to hang out with me then he'll call, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Neil's leaving has definitely left a hole in Sundays and everyone else is away on vacation or still a work. Poo.

Lions and tigers and thunderstorms. Oh my!

This morning was a morning of "Let's wake Sidney up" oddisms. It started with my alarm going off a little before 7am. I had no real intention of getting up at 7am, but with school around the next couple of bends I figured it's time to start reminding myself that eventually I will have to get up at 7am. So I woke up, slightly. I noticed that I had an incredible long mass-text message from an unknown number on my phone and after a little sleepy sleuthing and brain racking I remembered that Marissa is leaving for school this morning and that she must have been saying ta-ta to all of us. Just to be sure though I texted her back and she awkwardly admitted that it had been her texting me before the sun had come up. I tentatively fell back asleep and I was only down for about a half hour when the thunderstorm from Hell rolled in and scared the crap out of me. The lightning and thunder were so bright and loud and after a night of reading and watching SVU episodes I was too tired and still a little shocked to do anything but huddle under the ten blankets I've accumulated on my bed from having the air conditioning on too high while I sleep. The storm outside was so wild that car alarms kept going off and I could hear women screaming as they tired to make their way to the Septa stop. I love rainy mornings and I wish that this storm had happened Wednesday morning instead, it would have been a lot nicer and more appreciated then. Around 8am I texted one of my friends who also appreciates insane weather. He must have still been asleep because his response was a bit typoed but I got his point. Eventually the rain bouncing off of every one's air conditioning units lulled me back into unconsciousness until my alarm went off sometime after 10am. By then I was up so I did a little blog reading and finished the rest of the movie that I had left in my laptop.

It's a slow day at work today but I am pleased to announce that I have become an aunt. Amazing I know since my only sister is probably the last person on the planet to give birth out of wedlock. Well rest assured mom and all you other Christian crusaders my sister did not give birth. I just an aunt in name. One of the ladies I work with brought her grandchildren into the office today and to introduce us to all of them she adds aunt to our names and calls us all her work family. It's cute especially since I don't actually have to participate in anything past the introductions. It's an incredibly slow day today which is good because it's given me time to work on this and get a little reading done. I've started read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. I wish I could stop time and read all day because I can't put this book down. Unfortunately I have things to do and I keep getting interrupted. When I finish I'll let you know what I think, so far it's amazing. My friend over at My Everyday Discoveries is OBSESSED with the movies and the series and he even has a poll going about who makes a better Lisbeth Salander. You can share your opinion here.

After work I have to work out and then I think I'm going to head over to IKEA and pick up a few things and then go to Home Depot. I need spray paint to finish up my the stuff in my apartment and then I will be satisfied with any home improvements I've got going on for a little while. Somewhere in there I also have to clean up my kicthen.

A walk by definition has no destination. Even a cat knows that.

Second round.

I'm in an office right now doing absolutely nothing and I'm unsupervised and if I were doing this four or five years ago this would have been a very bad thing. For example (and mind you I still do this) whenever I am in one of my parents' offices I tend to find things to amuse myself even if it means disturbing their papers. I can definitely say that one has a better collection of junk than the other. Anyways instead of being my usual moderately destructive self, and because I already know where everything is in here, I am blogging, which is way more productive than anything that I would be doing anywhere else. Run ons ;)

Friday a successfully busy morning/day for me. I started in Jersey and now I'm in Philadelphia. Along the way I have handed in my portfolio for my nonfiction shorts class, sorted a ridiculous amount of text books and watched leftover clips from old Chelsea Lately shows. Okay maybe it hasn't been entirely too busy, but I do have a busy night of work ahead of me. Hopefully. I feel extremely proud of myself for completing my portfolio on time and was particularly impressed at my own personal effort to actually make multiple drafts of a piece before handing the portfolio in. It was a little tricky for me this time to get everything organized and together because it had to be handed in one long single word document. Usually each piece gets printed out and I can sort through it all and make sure that I have everything. This time I had to keep scrolling up and down the document and do a lot of cutting a pasting. The portfolio ended up being 35 pages so I had to be extra careful about sorting and layout. I also became particularly paranoid about not saving enough and probably messed up the word program with all my command+s-ing. Either way I am proud that I finished it. My writing has greatly evolved because of it and I owe a lot to my Hebrew Friend for pushing me and making me write properly and for an audience. He's very good at pushing me to make a piece that  much better and if I ever get something published he is definitely getting at least a footnote.

This weekend I read the first two books of The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. I only really decided to start reading them because two of my friends are excited about the movie coming out and talk about it all of the time and I wanted to be able to participate instead of blankly sitting there listening to them talk. I first heard about these books when I was a freshman in college. I used to follow a Twilight podcast that was more of a book club than a fan site. After the podcast people finished the Twilight books they moved on to The Hunger Games books and of course I was still aboard the romantic vampire train and stopped listening to the podcast and forgot all about The Hunger Games. Three years later I could kick myself because these books are awesome. I read the first one on Thursday at the beach and then purchased the second one on Friday and finished it at work on Saturday. The bookstore near me in currently out of the third one so right now I am debating on whether or I want to drive to find it after work so that I can take it to the beach tomorrow.

I seriously need this book, now!

This is kind of a weird scheduling week for me because I have two days off from work instead of my usual one. Last week a friend said that they wanted to go to the beach this week so I took tomorrow off of work to go. I love the place that I go because I have a yearly pass so I don't have to pay for parking and pay a separate admission fee to lie in the sand for a couple of hours. The place where I go is also a state park so the land is protected and natural. There aren't any beach combers tearing apart the beach and rebuilding it all of the time. It's really cool that way because nature controls it which means that each time I go it's a little bit different looking. I've also found that as much as I love being alone on the beach I also like to have someone there to go swimming with and to talk to just to break up the monotony. It's get too to have someone to ride down with and inexpensive too. All you really need is to stop at a store a pick up some cheap eats for the beach and that's it. Besides gas in the car that I already have and the $4 toll coming back, thank you EZ Pass for making me not worry about routing around foI'm in an office right now doing absolutely nothing and I'm unsupervised and if I were doing this four or five years ago this would have been a very bad thing. So anyways to end this, I have a friend who is going through a rough patch right now and as frustrating and annoying it is to be around them when they are acting this way, I love my friend and I want them to be happy. It's just very frustrating because there isn't a whole lot I can do for them right now because they have a lot going on in the inside that they need to sort out first. The best I can do is just listen and be supportive as best as I can. Really though I just want to do what I do when Max crashes into something a little hard: pick them up, squeeze them tight and watch the adult equivalent of Thomas the Tank Engine episodes. Too bad I'm only a five foot girl with the inability to lift anyone other than Max.

PS. The title is a wonderful line from my favorite dog Wilfred.
r change, it literally costs less than $10 dollars to go to the beach with me :)

Martin feels pregnant.

Crazy weekend. I'm not even sure how I managed to fit everything in that I did or that I even made it to Monday, but it happened and now it's Monday. After Thursday's adventures in eating which led to a very slow Friday morning breakfast at Yonni's with Cynthia! It was Israeli themed, very delightful assortment of foods especially the vegetable salad. Anyways after work I had double work and then went out. My night was extremely slow and I only pulled about $60 and was going to go home when Yonni asked if I wanted to go out with him and some of his friends. He caught me at just the right moment going out the door because I was all set to go home and take a shower and just go to bed, but instead I dug my other set of work clothes and drove out to meet them. While I was routing around in my car I had a nice conversation about how I'm from Vermont with our sous chef T. I don't actually know what T's real name is because it's just what everyone calls him. I should also start carrying around eyeliner with me because I didn't have a lot of makeup on at work and no one else had any with them before I left for the bar. It happened again Saturday night too when I went out again. Friday was a good night: Yonni did karaoke to Lady Gaga. I also got a chance to meet a couple of his friends. Very nice people, I particularly enjoyed his friend's girlfriend. She had a lovely personality and was incredibly funny. She also introduced Yon to Jerseylicious. He already does his own version of GTL, maybe a little Hebrew with a Jersey accent now.

Saturday I woke up early and drove out to Lancaster to see my mom who was down visiting my grandfather. It was a nice visit. We went out to breakfast at some kitschy country place. The food was good but it had a very religiously oppressed feeling to it, but you get that feeling anyways when you're in Lancaster County. There was a book rack with books for sale to keep waiting guests entertained. My two personal favorites were 52 Lies Heard in Church Every Sunday and The Big Book of Church Jokes.

There were a couple other Amish romance stories but I had to stop to eat. After breakfast we drove out to Palmyra to get Lebanon bologna for my dad. Lance only likes a very specific hard, extra dry bologna that comes in a cloth sack from a small specialty meat store with a German name where he grew up. Every time my mom goes without him she picks up the wrong one and there are only two to choose from. This time we made sure to call Lance before purchasing. She also kept picking things up and offering to buy them for me and my friends. I personally don't care for shoefly pie but if Yonni or Marg do I can give them directions to the place. After Palmyra was Lititz. Lititz is a smaller quainter version of Hershey that always smells of a better tasting chocolate due to the small factory that melts and molds chocolate almost every day of the week. We had lunch at a really charming cafe where the waitresses are dressed up as Victorian newsboys. The food was really really good and I may even drive back to visit again even though I've had more than my fair share of small yuppy towns. After lunch my mom had a strong desire to get her eyebrows waxed so she took me to get my nails done and then we did a little shopping. I've developed an obsession with the Lacie collection from Victoria's Secret and I've been trying to collect something in every color available, except for the ones with glitter. The still look a little tacky for me. I came home afterwards and then went over to Yonni's for more Israeli food.It was a nice time with Yonni, Cynthia! and Harry. Later I did the Cricket circuit with him and his sister. I didn't drink much, but when we left I got really really warm almost to the point that I thought I was going to pass out on his kitchen floor. I don't know what's going on but that's the second time that that's happened to me this summer and I'm starting to think that it's hormones from my birth control. I'm not thrilled if that's the case because the other forms out there don't look very appealing to me unless I've had three kids or want to gain three hundred pounds. I eventually fell asleep though and woke up Sunday feeling well rested and a little paranoid that I was getting sick. Summer colds are no fun.

Work was super slow Sunday morning. I made about fifty bucks for lunch and then got cut. I would have been made but there were absolutely no reservations on the books and with eleven servers on I thought it would be fair to let someone else try and make some money. I'm really excited that we have one of our old bartenders back. He's crazy but he does good bar business. After work I was maybe going to see a  movie but then when my plans got postponed I passed out. I wasn't even aware that I was tired until I laid down and then was completely shocked to wake up around 10:30pm. I only nap like that when I'm sick and my body needs extra rest so I think that I just needed some extra rest time to kick whatever I had going on. I only woke up too because I had a billion texts from my mom, Yonni and Neil. My mom just had to tell me she made it home before she went to bed and Neil wanted me to go to the bar with him and some people from work. If I hadn't already been in bed I would have considered it, but I told him that we would go out tomorrow night and play quizzo and have Ryan serve us kitchen messups. Sasha can come too! Yonni texted to tell me to blog and how he's really into Jerseylicious. I was going to write after that but then when I laid my head down again I didn't wake up until this morning.  I really needed the sleep I guess because I feel completely fine today and ready for running after work and maybe a showing of X-Men. I also need to get contact with Marg and see if she wants to go to Zavah before I head up to Vermont this weekend.

An Alexander kind of day.

Yesterday was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. And I do mean a terrible, horrible, no good very bad day. It's such a shame too because up until Saturday my weekend was going so well. It started off on the wrong foot when I decided to sleep off a hangover and not get up until 2pm. I have absolutely no nutritious food in my apartment because I haven't given myself enough time to go to the store. I had intended to get up and go and clean out my apartment and do all of my laundry, but because I slept in I didn't have enough time to do all of what I wanted to do and I didn't even bother to put a dent in my list. Then I went to work. Work was work, but worse. For the first half of my shift I was only given old people with coupons and old people with coupons do not leave good tips. Then I found out that I had to close even though I had closed the night before. I was fine with that. It had been a relatively slow day and I figured that it would be a slow night like it had been on Friday, but I still made sure to post the side work anyways. Then 9pm hit. People came through the door out of nowhere and that was when the staff decided that even though they weren't cut could pass off tables to the closers and that side work was suddenly optional. Ant, the other closer, and I were slammed with everyone else's tables and the other servers kept yammering for me to check their tables and clear them for cash out even though I was in a jungle of weeds way over my head. I don't know what triggered it but out of nowhere I started crying and my manager had to yell at everyone to let me alone and give me a minute to take care of my own tables before I could get to them. I was so embarrassed to be crying at the terminal, punching in orders, but for a minute I really needed Lance or on of Yonni's pep talks to keep myself from walking out the door or punch my coworkers in the face. NOT a good night. And then to top it all off I didn't get home until 1am because people decided that they couldn't wait for me to check their tables so they just left without doing their side work AND one of my tables walked out with their book after they paid so I never had a hard copy of the transaction and I didn't get a tip on their $98 check. I can finally understand why Lance does some of the things that he does and I am not too far behind.

On the bright side today I didn't have to open or close and I made $250 off of one party. So even though it was a long day I have a lot to show for it. I also don't mind the work when I am taking off next Sunday and Monday and will be on the beach for two days in Jersey.

Something from Iron Man 2:

1: "We need you."
2: "More than you know."
1: "Not that much."

Really looking forward to seeing Captain America, Harry Potter, and Transformers 3. I love movies a little too much sometimes.

It seems like all Jersey people do is hump and punch each other.

So I know last post that I would have this great story about me and Cynthia! driving to Newark to pick up our Hebrew Friend from the airport, alas!, this did not happen. Hebrew Friend has decided to stay in Israel another week and spend more time with his family. Funny, because he wasn't all too excited to go in the first place, but once he got there he's been very happy. Just goes to show what getting out of the city does for you. Anyways now I'm going to pick him up next weekend and Cynthia! will be at the beach so I'm traveling alone through the dark and dangerous streets of Newark until I pick up the Hebrew Hammer. I took the day off from work so I should just capture him and bring him down to Cynthia! or drop him at the Philadelphia exit and head to the beach myself. Just kidding Yon I'll take you home, but I really may just go to the beach afterwards. And to risk sounding too much like a teenage girl, Yonni I miss you and I'm excited to see you whenever you decide to come back from the Holy Land. Marg I miss you too. Your tiny apartment and I miss you in the city. Please come back from Maryland soon!

In this heat infested city I have come to the conclusion that I am more suited for a life at the beach. I'm just not sure when or where yet. With less than a year left here I have begun to face the grim reality of having to pack up everything in my apartment and move somewhere. I'm just struggling with the "where" bit. Right now my sister has a sweet gig at a beach resort in Florida and as I am no stranger to the service industry I am seriously beginning to consider something like that for a season or two.

Thursday was my last class! The exam was annoying and long, but now it's over and as long as I passed the course I really don't care anymore. The school is getting rid of the course in the spring and it's just a requirement for graduation that I won't need for anything else in life. Seriously it really is one of those classes that no one needs unless you're a history major. But hey! It's over and done with and I can focus on my nonfiction class and my world lit class that starts next week. Very excited for these two classes.

I am having the best weekend ever so far. I was supposed to go to Manayunk for a friend's birthday, but I ended up having to close at work and by the time I got out of there and would have gone home to shower and change everyone would have been much more drunk that they already were and I didn't want to have to spend the next two hours playing catch up. Instead I went out with some of my friends from work. We went to this play that has a late night happy hour and the best curly fries ever. We all got properly soused and then spent the last hour or two sobering up and eating curly fries and chatting. I smoked a cigarette and fully remembered why I stopped smoking. Worst tasting mouth ever. I also did tequila shots with Lauren and one of Neil's friends. I haven't had tequila since the worst Tequila Sunrise ever incident that involved a clothing free bartender and orange juice. It's now why I don't drink orange juice with alcohol. Anyways...Neil's friend was very nice and extremely cute so now I need to meet up with him again. Poor Neil, I'm systematically going through his friends this summer. But he's good with it so so am I.

I'm ending this with the video "Hello" by Martin Solveig. I love the video because it reminds me of Luke Wilson's character, Richie, from The Royal Tenenbaums. Richie is the epitome of the late '70s tennis player who has a John McEnroe-esque meltdown and leaves professional tennis to move back home. It is an excellent Wes Anderson film.

Is it really because I let you call me Barry?

Today is Friday which means that I have double work. Yesterday I did double work but in opposite order and then went to class and now I feel completely dead on the inside. Of course it didn't help that there was a giant lightning/thunder storm that started just as I was about to fall asleep, but right now I could really use a nap. I also think I strained my wrist at work this week, because right now it feels really sore anytime I bend it in any direction. I'm hoping it's just overused and not seriously damaged. I want to get out of tray service for the night, but I don't want to have to miss a whole bunch of work. I am also not going out tonight. I am putting my foot down right now and saying no. I have too much homework to catch up on and I am so tired that I just want to sleep.

So I finally caught up with my friend Karrie. She goes home every summer and so I don't see her very much. We try to call each other when we can, but for the last couple of weeks we were playing a very bad game of phone tag. It was literally to the point where I had to start passing messages to her through our friend Merrie just so I could maintain some sort of communication. Of Merrie, who was supposed to stay in the city for the summer, is now back in Baltimore and there is a good chance that Karrie will be back before Merrie is. My Hebrew Friend is currently in the Holy Land right now and hopefully taking the nice candid shots of Israel that I wanted him to take for me. He asked if I wanted something from Israel, but I just want to see what the desert country is really like. Almost all of my knowledge about Israel is ancient and comes from the religion classes that I take at school. My Hebrew Friend is straight up Israeli so he knows what it's really like and when he comes back I'm going to make him go through all of the pictures and explain everything to me. I had him go over currency and Hebrew before he left and now we're going to have more once I get those pictures. I'm hoping that Liz Bloch-Smith does another course to the Holy Lands next year so I can actually set foot in Israel and get a step closer to completing my minor. Next Thursday night/Friday morning Cynthia! and I are going to trek out to Newark to pick up our Hebrew Friend from the airport. I love random rambles through New Jersey. I used to do them all the time with friends at weird hours of the night.

Last night I watched Never Let Me Go with Keira Knightley, Andrew Garfield, and Carrey Mulligan. It's about a dystopian society in England where clones are grown and raised as organ donors for their Originals. The clones are raised in schools all over the countryside and not told about what they are until they are much older. They are also kept away from society and people have certain prejudices about whether or not the clones are real humans and have souls. The movie focuses on a group of friends: Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy, beginning as young children and following them until they begin their donations and eventual completion (death). The film is about young love and the pure human emotions or joy, love, and jealousy that every young person goes through. Even though I was familiar with the plot I couldn't help but cry throughout most of the movie because it was just too sad to know that those poor children would never have a full life, condemned to die as their organs are slowly harvested from them. Of course the crying could have also been from the PMS I'm currently raging against.

I can't believe that he paid for everyone, who ever heard of a rich nurse?

So I just read the syllabus for my next class that begins in two weeks and I am unbelievably excited about it. The class is on writing non-fiction shorts and is being taught by Spinner. I've never had her, but we've interacted quite frequently over this past semester, first when I tried to see if I could go on her Chile study tour and we discussed our love of Allende and South American literature and Norberg I couldn't go because of time and cost, but it turned out that the trip had to be canceled and now she's teaching this online course that I'm in. The other times that we've spoken were about course registrations and where to find a stapler in the English department (a lot harder than it should be, but also how I've become friendly with Fr. Brennan). Spinner also runs the Writing Center and is really enthusiastic about what she does, so I'm pretty excited to be taking her even if it is an online class. I've never taken one before, but Marge swears by them and I am looking forwards to not having to be chained to a classroom for eight weeks.

I got to go outside today during work to run errands and it ended up being a struggle for me to want to come back into the building. It is so nice and hot and sunny outside right now, that I am practically counting down the seconds to Monday when I can be back on the beach. I did run into Tom while I was running errands and he informed me that I can pick up my portfolio at anytime, so I'm going to email him about it next week. I can't wait to get it and see what he had to say about my final pieces. I did really well in the class (better than I thought I would) and I want to see what he had to say about everything. Running errands also gave me a chance to see the construction that is going on around campus. There is a lot of it all over the place, most of it away from where I work and have class so I don't see the progress so regularly. It is crazy how torn up everything is right now and how many trees and green spaces have been torn up to make way for all of the construction, I'm really hoping that these buildings turn out nice because all I want is a turn field on Maguire and a few more trees, not the Learning Center, which will just be a glorified computer lab and and place for students to nap in between classes.

My parents have taken off for Lancaster and I have three days of Bucca, starting tonight. Samantha is in Florida slowing burning the layers of skin off of her body and no one has been out in the boat yet this summer.

The title is a shout out to my mom. It's from Nurse Jackie.

Yellow model chick, yellow bottle sippin', yellow Lamborghini, yellow top missin'.

One day I will be able to have a nine to five job, today is not that day. Someday I will also only have to have one job to comfortably survive and today is also not that day. Soon hopefully (next five years maybe). I covered for someone at my server job last night and I completely forgot that she had the closing shift when I agreed to do it, and it was around 7pm when I realized that all of the people that I was working with had been there since the early afternoon and that I was going to be the one that would be closing tonight. I did have help last night though. I had to train one of the trainees in the closing procedures which was a terrible idea on my manager's part because I myself have only closed two or three times and we were working with skeleton crew and the Ecolab guy was coming into super clean the place. Everything was kind of mixed up and rushed because we had to get out of there and people had to do multiple tasks. I'm not going to lie, it kind of made me miss the closing shift at Borders. I was actually pleased with last night though because I ended up making double what I made on Friday, plus I didn't have to tip out as much as usual, plus I didn't have nearly as many tables to work with. I will say that I do think it's harder to work when it's slower because I get distracted easily and miss stuff. When it's busy I have to be on my game and not miss a beat and still go 100 mph.I developed this intense work ethic from my Dad to always have a sense of urgency and it comes out even more in the kitchen, which is our element so when I'm at work I can look pretty intense.

Last night was also very odd in that sense when you have been thinking about something and then for some reason, completely unintentionally or out of your control, they happen. Last night an old boyfriend of mine texted me at work. I hadn't spoken to him in a very long time and then out of the blue he started talking to me last night. It was light conversation about his graduating and living back at home (no surprise there) and how he occasionally sees my mother. It was fine, something to do while I stood around at work, but I really thought it was funny because tonight I have a pseudo-date with a guy who is almost exactly like him. It's really creepy that I've met someone almost exactly like him. Don't get me wrong the guy I'm going to see is very nice and pleasant looking, but the fact that he could potentially be exactly like an old boyfriend of mine makes me want to vomit just a tiny bit. I really am trying to go into this with an open mind and not let any pre-judgments mess this up, but I am going to take this unbearably slow to the point where if he is like the person I think he might be like I'm just not going to bother and hope that he gets bored with me. No maybe not, I'll be polite and honest and just tell him I'm not interested. He's already planning a million dates in the future and he keeps texting me about them which is already a huge turnoff and I am really struggling right now not to call him and just cancel, ugh.

I am going to use tonight to work on my speaking skills. It's this ridiculous thing about me where I can't speak unless spoken to first and even then I'm a terrible conversationalist, but I have recently discovered that this is only in social settings for me. At work I can talk my table up no problem at all. I can approach large and small groups of people that I have never even met and talk to them about just about anything to the point where they love me and will order anything off of the menu that I tell them to, but when it comes to being out at a party I tank miserably. I'm going to start practicing tonight with the guy who sits next to me in class. He always comes to class in a suit and I'm curious about what kind of job he does because I feel like he is way to young to be having a suit job. Maybe he won't be exactly like my ex-boyfriend.

A little pain, a little pasta, and a whole lot of tea.

I love my new job, but I definitely forgot how messy restaurant work can be, especially when it's high volume. I've been spoiled up at the Hob Knob with just one seating and then leaving by 9pm at the latest. It's more like the GMI, long hours, more tables, a way more eclectic group of staff, but instead of Jamaicans we have have Mexicans. I need to get a couple more white shirts this week, hopefully Kohls restocked their boys department.

I have almost awesome news: Lance says that I can get the Wii when I come home this summer. Samantha will be in Florida for most of the summer so I won't have to fight her for it. I just have to reason with my mom. Mom if you give me the Wii, you'll have more of a reason to come visit PA and stock me with food. So it's a win-win for both of us.

I also have bad news for me: my throat simply will not feel better. I have done everything that I can think of to soothe the icky pain. And it's been a tough week with work and school and the crazy weather (which I think is aggravating it even more). I've dissolved more than my fair share of cough drops, gargled an unhealthy amount of peroxide, drank my body weight in herbal medicinal teas, and neti potted to the point where my sinuses resemble the Jersey Shore more than a human sinus cavity and there has been no relief. I want to rip my throat out and then punch someone it's irritating me that bad. I'm also a little worried that it's doesn't mess up my tonsils or travel up my Eustachian tube to my ear and give me an ear infection. The thought of any of those make me almost want to cry and if it does turn into tonsillitis or an ear infection I will be crying and very very unhappy.

On another note in the life of Sidney: I got extremely schwasted this weekend. I completely intended to get inebriated when I went out on Friday which is why I had a friend give me a ride to the bar, but I didn't intend to let it get as far as it did. I have had to be a responsible grownup lately and I just wanted a night where I didn't have to worry about driving anywhere or having to worry about any of my friends doing something silly. I wanted to have a selfish night, it's just been a while since I've had a selfish night and I ended up pre-gaming the pre-game. I broke the Cardinal Rule of field hockey and I paid the price, but I also have one of the most amazing friends in the entire world who took it upon himself to take me home and take care of me. He didn't have to do any of it, but he took it upon himself to help me out because that's the type of person he is: an incredibly selfless and caring friend. He took me home and got me cleaned up and into bed. He made sure that I was safe and then I think he told me a story about a bunny rabbit (or maybe it was a squirrel). He probably would have even stayed the night if I had really needed him too, he's just that awesome. I need to do something in return for going above and beyond, but I know he won't accept anything. So I'm letting him know: If you every need anything, anything at all in the whole wide world you can call me and I will be like the mailman. I will fight rain, snow, sleet, hail, or death of night to help you out. I love you, man (that last part would have sounded way cooler if I were Jason Segel).  He wrote an incredibly beautiful post about the selflessness of friendship. Good friends hep each other out no matter what. I would do anything for my friends because I love them.

Shopping in the boys department.

I had two things I was thinking about earlier today and one of the I completely forgot about. One was about me and the other one was probably about about me but not so indirectly, but then I forgot about it. So instead I will share my joy that I got to color in class today. My teacher brought in a 64 count box of crayons and I went to town depicting a scene from Heart of Darkness. And now that I am writing this I realized that the other thing was about my new path as short pulp fiction writer. Apparently my classmates really enjoyed the idea with my story, but they were conflicted about whether they thought it should be dark and mysterious or hammy and ridiculous. On guy thought that it had a pulpy vibe to it and so my teacher has tasked me with making it over the top and to push it to the limits of ridiculousness. I may even have to reference Samuel L. Jackson or a ridiculous vampire movie. We shall see. It also means more work for My Hebrew Friend who I've gotten for be my chief source of criticisms and suggestions with this piece. I struggle with fiction more so than with other genres and I need him to make sure things don't get too out of hand.

The other thing that I was thinking about was relationship and how I sort of accidentally fall into them. My friends are all in different stages in their lives and in different places in the world of romance, but none of them seem to have the same process as me. Of course it's all the same for every one: person meets person. For me though I can't seem to just meet a person and instantly be dating them. I start out as friends and over time something changes for me and I start to see them differently and somehow we end up as more than where we started. Right now most of the guys that I am close with are already with other people or I haven't found the others to be right for me in that way yet. It's a particular process for me somehow that I still can't seem to nail down. I'm kind of nervous though because what if I finally end up with someone right before I have to leave. Conundrum. But also a bridge that I'll cross if it gets to that. I'm finally in a good place with Yonni where I feel comfortable alone with him to be myself without the pretensions of sex looming over us, or my need to not say anything wrong around him, or doing something that would make him not like me. It's taken awhile, but now I don't feel bad critiquing him about something or telling him about anything. It's the same with Dan. I wrote a story about us for my non-fiction piece. Andi says that he will be one of those guys I will always "feel something for" but writing that story was like letting go of a lot of stuff that I was holding on to. Growing my hair out was like a liberation from him.

Okay so I never really finished, I just stopped and went to work instead of just saving. The best part of the day after coloring with crayons and the discussion I had with Amy in class about how desirable Marlon Brando is in Streetcar despite how crazy the character and the Dr. Green agreeing with us and then it turning to Marlon Brando weighing 200 pounds more than he was supposed to for Apocalypse Now which was mot excellent, was my trip to sketchy Kohl's down on Township Line. Seriously this store looks so out of the place on the side of the road. It looks like it's in a small field on the edge of a swamp. But that's DelCo for you. Anyways...women have stopped dressing formal in the work place I have found. I couldn't find a white button down anywhere. At least not a white collared one with a breast pocket. And believe me I tried Ross, two Targets, and a TJ Maxx. I had to shop the little boys department to find something that would fit. So so sad. But it's nice to know I not too fat that I have to shop in the men's section.

Also I have a killer sore throat and Arcade Fire's We Used to Wait is my new crack.

An even worse title than my fiction piece.

I have The Carpenter's Superstar stuck in my head, but not the version by The Carpenters. It's the one done by Sonic Youth, the one people know from Juno when Jason Bateman gets all creepy on Ellen Page.

I just found out my journalism class is cancelled for tomorrow morning, which is both a good and a bad thing. Good because that class is getting annoying and draining and I've definitely come to the realization that while I have learned a lot about internet publication and multimedia presentation, I do not want to be a journalist. Sorry Aunt Sylvia, but you'll have to find another relation to follow in your footsteps. It's bad though because it now means I have more time to procrastinate working on my fiction piece that's due for workshop. I have to have fourteen copies to hand out in class so my classmates can tear it apart on Monday. I got a good start done before I went to work today and I only need another hour or so working at a solid pace to get a decent draft done for class. I just need to suck it up and do it.

Today practice was fantastic despite Lauren and I refusing to get out of the car and Lauren texting me a million times to make sure I would come get her at 5am. Thank god she texts me for a solid half hour before I get her otherwise I would just roll over and go back to sleep. Today Guy came and did a whole practice on skating. Not very technically challenging for me because of my background, but I definitely got a solid workout in. My body is soooo sore right now from skating on my butt Russian circles, but now everyone knows I can do a Shoot the Duck on both feet and ended up being demonstrator for half the drills. Not terrible because Guy and I ended up having a great chat about skating and how hockey is 90% skating and that everyone should start out with the intensive training that figure skaters go through. Most of the girls think that I'm naturally good on the ice, but they don't realize that I've been drilled and tested on cross-overs and edges for years and that I actually competed in events just for skating around the rink on my inside and outside edges. I had to put a lot of work, discipline, and muscle training into being able to do just half a lap of power pulls. The girls don't have to come close to what I do, but they need to realize that it takes a lot more to get even just good blade control than what they're giving now.

Rawr I wish my body didn't hurt so bad. Maybe the soreness will keep me awake long enough to finish my story or maybe I will just fall asleep ad wake up like a broke pretzel. We shall see...

Case of the Mondays? Not me.

Father Feeny always asks us if we have the Mondays when he sees us all lined up outisde of Journalism and not looking super excited to be there. Father Feeny is the type of teacher who is always excited to talk about English and his classes and he always wants to know if we're having a good time. Of course when our teacher is fifteen minutes late to class you tend to not get super excited about having to stand in the hallway. Today was not a Case of the Mondays kind of day. It was raining which put a mild damper because I was so comfortable in bed. I looked like a giant star all limbs in all directions under my comforters and through the open window I could hear the rain pelting the side of the building. It was really relaxing and I had to push myself to get out of bed and to the car where I discovered that I had left a window open and the front door unlocked. Miraculously nothing was stolen or wet. You know that's it's going to be a good day when the stupid things you do end up being perfectly fine.

I got to school early so I could work on my sound/slide project. I took a chance in the Maguire parking lot and low and behold it was nearly empty. At 9am people usually have to fight for a spot. With the weather I guess not too many people wanted to go to class. Weather like this also keep security from checking for parking permits and so I end up without getting ticketed. Last night I got an email saying Creative Writing was going to be cancelled. I was a little disappointed because it's one of my more likeable classes, but I used the time to hang out with Eanan in the Perch. I haven't seen him or Devin or Andi lately because I've been busy and don't have a lot of time on the weekends to do anything during the day. We only have a little more than a month of school left in the semester so I'll be able to hang out with Andi then. Miss that girl.

I have my job orientation later this evening. Nervous/excited like I said before to see how it goes. It will be fine of course M said he might be in for dinner and I always find it weird to see for employers at new jobs. It always like, "Hey this is what I left you for!" Not really a big deal if I do. Allyson stopped by work last night and we talked for a while and we definitely agreed that M is totally skeezy sometimes and could stand to lose the shorts. It's not even warm outside. I should make plans to do something with her and Niambi sometime too.

I'm hoping orientation doesn't last more than an hour or two and then I can have my Monday nights free. I used to work Monday nights last semester and even though I haven't had to these past few months I still feel like there is something I should be doing. I'll figure it out, maybe I can get my Mom to buy me a class card for hot yoga. I need something to stretch me out and tone me up. Has anyone done hot yoga and really liked it?

Oh yes I forgot. I've started tracking my weight as a daily affirmation to loose it and to see where my base is and how far I need to go. Does anyone else have any little daily tricks to keep them motivated? I read that it takes about 28 days to build a good habit. I need something to puch me the first 28 days. Also has anyone triend the Be-hot supplements for women athletes from GNC and what do you think?

Rest and relaxation, but no red wine.

I'm not going to lie as much as I love going out after work with friends, I'm really loving that I decided to come home and just sit in bed for a little bit and let my body unravel. I have the pillows all arranged nicely and supportively on my back, the comforters and really fluffy and spread out at the bottom of the bed supporting my legs and the paper lanterns above the mirror fill the room with a gentle glow. I still have a few things to do around the apartment: pick up my room, make something to eat, and clean up the giant pile of things I pulled out of my utility closet this morning in search of duck tape. Usually on a night like this I would call My Hebrew Friend or Marg and see if they wanted to come over and watch movies and indulge in red wine, but I saw My Hebrew Friend yesterday and Marg's spending the weekend at Drexel and I'm out of red wine. Tonight is for me and my chance to just get to rest and relax on my own. I may even sleep in tomorrow past 8am. For now though I'm content just to sit here and write.

I received an update on the good news from earlier this week. I am no longer going to have to be unemployed. In fact that's exactly what I shouted out at Willa Cather today before we epically high fived in front of several perplexed customers. Now she just needs to solve her set of anxieties and we'd all be set. After Willa left though I slowly started to melt into the floor. My converses were a poor choice to wear especially since they are so worn out and old that I would rather cut my feet off right now than have to put them on again. It got very very slow almost to the point where I could have just stayed in the back all night and no one would have noticed. I let Ruth leave early, it was that slow. I kind of wish she had stayed because after she left The Prophet started chatting me up and it was kind of annoying. Ever since Yonni pointed something out to me I've become more aware about how oblivious I am about guys. Honestly when I got together with a guy this past fall I had no idea that that was his intention until it happened. Unless I'm the person going after something I rarely have any idea about what is going on around me when it concerns me. Total fail and now I'm starting to wonder how many opportunities I passed up because of my total obliviousness. Anyways I like to look at The Prophet, he's pretty but he's had odd interactions with some of my friends and it's best to just keep him at a distance at all times.

Yesterday at work Zach Galiafinakis told me about a movie called Peggy Sue Got Married. He told me not to be fooled by the title and that it was actually a really great movie. Another coworker also chimed in and said that it was not what you would expect and that it is actually a very well done movie. I think I'm going to watch it tonight. I need to take a break from Murder, She Wrote.

Green Portuguese Beer

I'm not Irish and I'm not at Bala right now getting schwasted with the rest of my school's student body (the ones over 21 of course). The only green I have is a shirt that I got from a charity in India that read: Keep Calm and Carry On. Today I am sitting at other work writing this because there is nothing to do in the office other than eat copious amounts of Irish food and the leprechaun cake. Now I wish I had the balls to skip Sophomore Sem and go to Bala with KatWoman but I we have our papers due today and I have a deep fear of the teacher. Love her, but terribly afraid to skip out on her.

Okay so on top of all of the Irish foodies that I've been indulging in this morning, a girl from one of the classrooms came into the office and told us that there was Portuguese food in 313. Half the office immediately went out to investigate and since I have never really had any authentic Portuguese food so I got some too. Interesting mix of meats and seafoods all of it very good but it was all a little hard to finish. So much food in the office today.

I have to work today. My days at work at numbered dun dun dunnnnn. Tonight Other Jon and I are going out and hopefully some other people are going to come too. I told him we have to see if we can get the bar to give us green beer. A little food coloring to some PBR would be fantastic. I just need to finish the day stronger than it started.

              Yummy!

Sink or swim?

You know you've somehow hit a new low in your life when your mother is sending you some random emails about the dangers of stress eating and weight management. Of course it could be just because we're about to go on vacation and she doesn't want to be embarrassed by how I look in a bathing suit or the fact that I'm living paycheck to paycheck and she's figured that I'm not eat properly. I'm going to say that it's a bit of both, my mother is a complex woman like that.

I've been awake now for a little more than 12 hours. Around 11:00am I was already so exhausted from being practice and getting over being sick that I wanted to kill something. I had to settle with trampling some grass on Claver Lawn. About as satisfying as you would think. Practice was good today, except for the whole ralphing thing, but that didn't hit until near the end so overall not a terribly big deal. Plus Brian was concerned and that's always nice. We actually had a scrimmage and practiced lines and tried to get as close to actual gameplay as possible. The team is going to a tournament in Maryland this weekend and they need to know what they're doing before they go. I can't be with them, I have to serve coffee to Mainliners all weekend. The only lame thing about practice was that Therese brought along some kid who ended up being more of a hindrance than a help. I think she wanted someone to help run drills in case we didn't have most of our coaches this morning.

I think Marg wants to go out tonight. I'll go out with her but I'm getting one ginger ale have a little girl chat and then I'm back to the apartment to write a quick paper. I need to get that and some creative writing done for tomorrow. Slowly I'm falling behind and this weekend is my very last chance to get caught up before it's too late. So either expect very little from me this weekend or a lot because I'll be procrastinating as much as possible.

Today.

Blogging live from my journalism class. We're previewing the sound and video footage that we had to edit for an assignment and I've seen everything a billion times for the past couple of weeks and now I'm moving on to writing about something completely different. In fact I've just been freed from the class with a bunch of time left to go. Most people are leaving but I'm staying to write a little. It's still early in the day and this could easily be the high light of it, so I figure it's best to get something down now. It's like a writing prompt for later.

Big news! There is a very furry dog in class. It's part of a project for another section and it has been hanging out in the communications lab all morning. Nico the dog has been very calm and extremely fluffy, but there is still one girl who is veyr frightened of him. She's worries that the 8 month old dig with hip displasia is going to jump up and bite her. Silly girl.

Later in the day:
I burnt my wrist. Right on inside where the skin is soft. I've had a terrible time with burns lately, and this one is particularly excruciating. It's very sharp and rough but still has a dull achy undertone that will last a while. I'm out of anything to put on it too. I took an Advil but I'm going to have to tough it out for the rest of the day and I won't be home until later this evening. I almost don't want to have to go to other work and theology and just stay home with my burn, but there's nothing I can do in the apartment so I'm trudging back to school for other work and class. I have had some rather unfortunate luck with burns. A few months ago I had a giant square burn on my arm from when I slammed the oven door on my arm at work and then I got a long lesion looking burn on my stomach from dumping boiling water when I slipped my grip on a pot. I kept showing The Ballerina that one to cheer her up at work. It grosses us out but the fact that someone else's life sucks a little bit more than her's does at the moment made her a little bit happier. Poor Ballerina.

Update: Blister on my wrist ruptured. Painful and n'est bien pas.

I have to clean the kitchen when I get home tonight. I kind of wish I lived in a hole where I didn't have a kitchen and the rent is free. I've found that if I clean a room every other day or so I can keep the apartment relatively clean and by Friday I don't have to do as much as I usually do.

Later later in the day:
Oh Ginger Viking! How boring you are, but what an impeccable dresser. Seriously it bogles my mind how a divinity student can afford to dress like a J. Crew model. Must become a Princeton divinity student immediately. It's probably just the clothes,...and the beard,...and his height, but this guy can do no wrong in the looks and clothing departments. He only wears J. Crew, Banana, and Ralph and he wears them well. I love when guys dress like that. They look so dreamy and handsome.

Homework time! And I'm wearing a t-shirt!

It's dark out now:
Oh I've been struck by the stomach plague. Ugh, very draining and uncomfortable. I need someone to bring me Triscuts and ginger ale and a cool washcloth.

Double fuck! My computer charger broke!
Good news: Physics taught me how to get it to work again.
Bad news: I still have to buy a new one and my tummy still feels icky.

Sunday morning couldn't get away from it.

Bad call on deciding to work for Willa Cather today instead of taking the day off to do homework and clean up the apartment. I even tried to get up early today to get as much as I could done, but I couldn't get myself up in time to do anything. I had to go to work and try to not relive the worst day of work imaginable  in the history of all working days that was Saturday. Holy FUCK Saturday sucked. But now it's over, moving on. Work today was fine, pretty tough on the ankles. It's like I'm pregnant or five hundred pounds overweight after four nights of work. Not pregnant by the way Mom.

At work I've been reading The Rum Diaries by Hunter S. Thompson. I've read some of his other books and articles, but this one is new to me. It was also the only Hunter S. Thompson novel at work. Sad. The Rum Diaries is beat journalism meets gonzo journalism with rum, sex, and sun tans. Set in Costa Rica, I only have fifty pages to go I'll let you know how it is once I finish it on Thursday.

After work I drove straight to Andi's to get food because I was starved. I don't really give a crap about football, but I did get one of the Parsons Twins to make pigs in a blanket so it was still a win for me. I left early. Too many smelly guys does not juxtapose nicely with Sidney's nose. I had my hour of football fun and then I had to leave to do homework and laundry and avoid doing homework and laundry by writing blog posts and watching Weeds. Tonight's the last night of no sleep. Hebrew Boy said he's working better by getting better sleep; I need to get my act together and get to bed at reasonable hours because service starts this week.
