A walk by definition has no destination. Even a cat knows that.

Second round.

I'm in an office right now doing absolutely nothing and I'm unsupervised and if I were doing this four or five years ago this would have been a very bad thing. For example (and mind you I still do this) whenever I am in one of my parents' offices I tend to find things to amuse myself even if it means disturbing their papers. I can definitely say that one has a better collection of junk than the other. Anyways instead of being my usual moderately destructive self, and because I already know where everything is in here, I am blogging, which is way more productive than anything that I would be doing anywhere else. Run ons ;)

Friday a successfully busy morning/day for me. I started in Jersey and now I'm in Philadelphia. Along the way I have handed in my portfolio for my nonfiction shorts class, sorted a ridiculous amount of text books and watched leftover clips from old Chelsea Lately shows. Okay maybe it hasn't been entirely too busy, but I do have a busy night of work ahead of me. Hopefully. I feel extremely proud of myself for completing my portfolio on time and was particularly impressed at my own personal effort to actually make multiple drafts of a piece before handing the portfolio in. It was a little tricky for me this time to get everything organized and together because it had to be handed in one long single word document. Usually each piece gets printed out and I can sort through it all and make sure that I have everything. This time I had to keep scrolling up and down the document and do a lot of cutting a pasting. The portfolio ended up being 35 pages so I had to be extra careful about sorting and layout. I also became particularly paranoid about not saving enough and probably messed up the word program with all my command+s-ing. Either way I am proud that I finished it. My writing has greatly evolved because of it and I owe a lot to my Hebrew Friend for pushing me and making me write properly and for an audience. He's very good at pushing me to make a piece that  much better and if I ever get something published he is definitely getting at least a footnote.

This weekend I read the first two books of The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. I only really decided to start reading them because two of my friends are excited about the movie coming out and talk about it all of the time and I wanted to be able to participate instead of blankly sitting there listening to them talk. I first heard about these books when I was a freshman in college. I used to follow a Twilight podcast that was more of a book club than a fan site. After the podcast people finished the Twilight books they moved on to The Hunger Games books and of course I was still aboard the romantic vampire train and stopped listening to the podcast and forgot all about The Hunger Games. Three years later I could kick myself because these books are awesome. I read the first one on Thursday at the beach and then purchased the second one on Friday and finished it at work on Saturday. The bookstore near me in currently out of the third one so right now I am debating on whether or I want to drive to find it after work so that I can take it to the beach tomorrow.

I seriously need this book, now!

This is kind of a weird scheduling week for me because I have two days off from work instead of my usual one. Last week a friend said that they wanted to go to the beach this week so I took tomorrow off of work to go. I love the place that I go because I have a yearly pass so I don't have to pay for parking and pay a separate admission fee to lie in the sand for a couple of hours. The place where I go is also a state park so the land is protected and natural. There aren't any beach combers tearing apart the beach and rebuilding it all of the time. It's really cool that way because nature controls it which means that each time I go it's a little bit different looking. I've also found that as much as I love being alone on the beach I also like to have someone there to go swimming with and to talk to just to break up the monotony. It's get too to have someone to ride down with and inexpensive too. All you really need is to stop at a store a pick up some cheap eats for the beach and that's it. Besides gas in the car that I already have and the $4 toll coming back, thank you EZ Pass for making me not worry about routing around foI'm in an office right now doing absolutely nothing and I'm unsupervised and if I were doing this four or five years ago this would have been a very bad thing. So anyways to end this, I have a friend who is going through a rough patch right now and as frustrating and annoying it is to be around them when they are acting this way, I love my friend and I want them to be happy. It's just very frustrating because there isn't a whole lot I can do for them right now because they have a lot going on in the inside that they need to sort out first. The best I can do is just listen and be supportive as best as I can. Really though I just want to do what I do when Max crashes into something a little hard: pick them up, squeeze them tight and watch the adult equivalent of Thomas the Tank Engine episodes. Too bad I'm only a five foot girl with the inability to lift anyone other than Max.

PS. The title is a wonderful line from my favorite dog Wilfred.
r change, it literally costs less than $10 dollars to go to the beach with me :)

Did you all just vomit a little right then? Good, that’s what true love tastes like.

I wasted a perfectly good title on a lame excuse for a post so I'm thinking of recycling it down the line sometime. It was from Wilfred and if you're not watching this show by now get on it because you are missing out. This particular title is from an article I read on Hello Giggles. For those of you who haven't checked out all of the awesome giggles or if you're a guy you most likely haven't heard of the site, but it is Zooey Deschanel's answer to the lack of fun cute website geared specifically to women of all ages, just about. I love the site that she created with her friends because it has a wide variety of articles and essays written by all different types of women and the few select guys brave enough to submit something. The website is updated daily so there are always new things to read and see and there are also fun categories and series from regular posters. Once things calm down around here I am going to take a chance and try to submit some of my work to the site. I just don't know how I'll be able to compete with my favorite columns: Belz on Bell and Big Booty Power Hour. Lol catz.

Anyways to make up for my lack of posting I have decided to announce that I have two days off this week and next week which means that there will be a continued lack of posting for a little while and then come to think of it I will be back in Vermont for a long weekend and I will have limited internet access there and hopefully it will also be the weekend of the Burton sale so I will be too busy loading up on new winter gear, shoes, and maybe even a new backpack. Please please let the Burton sale be the weekend I am home otherwise I will be sending Samantha to Burlington to do my dirty work. It's definitely time to get a new jacket and a new bag. I just can't the thought of retiring my white though, it has been halfway around the world with me and now is my day pack at the beach.

I'm big on plaid I just haven't settled on the color scheme yet.

Swallowing makes my tummy hurt.

Hebrew Friend beat me to it, but yesterday I went to the beach with some friends. I wasn't even thinking beach trip when he called me Tuesday and asked what time we should leave by. And when he said that he wanted to drive and that there were a few extra people coming I wasn't even thinking about where we would be going. I was just excited that there would be more than just myself this time. While I am all for alone time on the beach it is nice to have others around to talk to and go swimming with. I was also thinking that we would be going somewhere other than the state park since Yonni's a big fan of the southern beaches as well as the state park. I guess he's found his spot though because he asked for the park pass and knew exactly where to go down at the far end. It was a really nice selection of people who were with me too. There was my Hebrew Friend of course, but also Erin a girl I used to work with and Dev a lady that went to school with Yonni. I hadn't seen Erin at all since I left my job at the bookstore so it was nice catching up with her and I had only spoke a few words past hello with Dev when I first met her so it was excellent to get to know her as well.

Leaving Philadelphia it was extremely hot so we had the air conditioning on in the car for the ride down, but when we got out onto the beach we found it to be rather chilly and windy. The water was excellent with big waves and much warmer than it had been, but a few hours in I was huddled under two towels trying to keep as warm as possible. I swear it was going to storm, but then the sun came out and warmed us all up. Some even got a bit sunburned. It was nice to have so many people in the group because it gave us more things to do with each other. Yon brought a Frisbee as always though the wind made it hard to throw well at some points and Dev brought an excellent card game called Five Crowns. It was a bit like gin rummy and poker all mixed together but with a double deck of cards. The cards were really beautifully illustrated and reminded me of characters from an ancient Babylonian royal family or something you would have seen on one of the crusades. I even got a chance to read a little from Lolita and write in my log book. I showed the book to Yonni, but it's not finished and there isn't a whole lot about him in it. I need to start writing his stories down too so that he has a place in the archives. I want to finish the log book by the beginning of next summer so I need to be more diligant about writing in it.

After about six hours of beach time, my uncle invited us over for dinner and a chance to use a real toilet. Everyone agreed to some food before the trip home and I warned them that he likes to talk a lot. It seemed like a good time was had by all, Dev was really wonderful with my uncle, I think he liked her the best. It was a quick visit because we were all tired and wanted to get home. By the time we were back at Yonni's house I could barely keep my eyes open. I helped him clean up our beach mess as best as I could before I had to get back to my apartment and crash. It was wonderful to be tired from the sun and swimming because I soon fell soundly asleep and didn't even get a chance to read my Hebrew Friend's beach review until I woke up this morning. It has really been a wonderful summer so far. Vermont in a couple of weeks.

Well if you're uncomfortable you should take off your pants.

Last night while I was driving home I came across a deer standing in the middle of the road. I've seen a lot of deer in the park an they are a more than common occurrence  in Vermont, but this one was standing in the middle of the road in the commercial park across from where my apartment. I saw it in time to stop and it stood still looking at me for a minute and then became confused, circled about and ran off across a parking lot. Luckily for the deer another car wasn't coming along because the deer easily could have slammed into another car while it turned about getting oriented. A few minutes earlier a fox ran past my car while I was sitting at a red light. It was a total zoo on the streets of Philadelphia last night.

This morning I had my first Wimba meeting for my nonfiction class. I can finally say that I have complete empathy for the graduate students that bitch about it in the office. Wimba is a pain and everything we did easily could have been accomplished over Skype or a conference call. It was kind of fun getting up at 6:30am and having a workshop about a concise literary essay that I had recently written. I have to rework parts of it and then let my writing partner look it over and work on it with me. My professor was very encouraging about having a writing partner since I can't get into see her because of summer hours. Good thing Yonni knows what he's doing. The piece is for my final portfolio, but it's something that I want to polish and consider submitting to a literary magazine such as Brevity once it's finished. I also have to send a copy to my dad since it's about him. I just need Thursday to be over so I can finally commit myself to my writing. I've also opened up my log book again. I had a four year plan to fill it up and I probably would have finished it last year if I had actually written in it on a regular basis. The book was a graduation gift from a close friend and the format is designed after the log books that Ms. Knapp has us keep while in Greece. If she hadn't passed away I think I would have sent it to her after it was filled.

I also found out this morning that Samantha experienced death up close recently. She and I are no stranger to death, she especially during her middle years of high school, but nothing quite like this. I would have thought that of the two of us to see it happen, she would not have been the first. I still have a wholesome milk and cookies Amish attitude of my  sister because of the more sheltered life she led and her extremely boring life choices that she's made up until these past few months. It's funny the places that life takes you and it's curious that only a few days ago I wrote about death and drowning in my journal for class after reading CLE in Brevity.

I'm going to Jersey tomorrow, weather be damned. I also have my history final Thursday night so this may very well be the last post before my Hebrew Friend returns from the Holy Land (unless something super exciting comes up).

I can't believe that he paid for everyone, who ever heard of a rich nurse?

So I just read the syllabus for my next class that begins in two weeks and I am unbelievably excited about it. The class is on writing non-fiction shorts and is being taught by Spinner. I've never had her, but we've interacted quite frequently over this past semester, first when I tried to see if I could go on her Chile study tour and we discussed our love of Allende and South American literature and Norberg I couldn't go because of time and cost, but it turned out that the trip had to be canceled and now she's teaching this online course that I'm in. The other times that we've spoken were about course registrations and where to find a stapler in the English department (a lot harder than it should be, but also how I've become friendly with Fr. Brennan). Spinner also runs the Writing Center and is really enthusiastic about what she does, so I'm pretty excited to be taking her even if it is an online class. I've never taken one before, but Marge swears by them and I am looking forwards to not having to be chained to a classroom for eight weeks.

I got to go outside today during work to run errands and it ended up being a struggle for me to want to come back into the building. It is so nice and hot and sunny outside right now, that I am practically counting down the seconds to Monday when I can be back on the beach. I did run into Tom while I was running errands and he informed me that I can pick up my portfolio at anytime, so I'm going to email him about it next week. I can't wait to get it and see what he had to say about my final pieces. I did really well in the class (better than I thought I would) and I want to see what he had to say about everything. Running errands also gave me a chance to see the construction that is going on around campus. There is a lot of it all over the place, most of it away from where I work and have class so I don't see the progress so regularly. It is crazy how torn up everything is right now and how many trees and green spaces have been torn up to make way for all of the construction, I'm really hoping that these buildings turn out nice because all I want is a turn field on Maguire and a few more trees, not the Learning Center, which will just be a glorified computer lab and and place for students to nap in between classes.

My parents have taken off for Lancaster and I have three days of Bucca, starting tonight. Samantha is in Florida slowing burning the layers of skin off of her body and no one has been out in the boat yet this summer.

The title is a shout out to my mom. It's from Nurse Jackie.

When I look out my window I see my friend's apartment building.

Soooo....I wasn't going to write and then I was going to write and then I wasn't and then the Captain said to Alfonso, "Alfonso tell me a story so Alfonso began: "It was a dark and stormy night and the Captain said to Alfonso, 'Alfonso tell me a story,' so Alfonso began," you get the point. So I decided just to write. I also have a boatload of energy because I'm eating way too late (I usually like to have my last big meal before 8pm but I got distracted) and I also took some old Robitussin that I found on top of my fridge and I'm not sure it its the AWAKE kind or the kind that makes you drowsy so I'm now trying to wear myself down and channel some of the energy.

Today started out bad and got exponentially worse in a very short time and other than a nice phone chat with Yonni (he passed his Praxis! Virtual high five bro!) and some potentially good news from my school boss, it wasn't until 5pm that things started to turn around. But hey we all have those days, hopefully yours don't include getting a boot on your car or locking your keys and your school books inside the car and then having to haul yourself across town to find keys to get yourself into your apartment and then into your locked car. Mine did! But thanks to Kat, Anna, and John who let me vent extensively to them, and to my advisor who gave me the number to AAA and didn't mind that I spent the entire class talking about registration instead of reading, and to Chris who was totally adorable to me for some reason. Boy you are going to be such a hottie in two years, it's a shame you're only nineteen now. And really once I got back into my apartment and chatted with my dad I really calmed down and didn't care about the day. In fact after I got de-booted, I went to Old Navy and picked up another work shirt (thank you small fat kids) and took a really long walk around Lower Merion. Thank god I walked because with this cold I came home with a giant trail of snot running down my face because I didn't have any tissues and I didn't want to wipe my nose on the sleeve of my good fleece. Gross, but I really like my clothes. My mom really pulled me through the day very unexpectedly when she sent me a text telling me to read the biography for Cathy Lamb on Amazon. Her books look lame and kind of like the stuff Samantha is into, but her bio is great. I swear I'm the East Coast version of this woman  minus twenty years. I've also become the Iron Chef of leftovers. Tonight it was just chicken, spinach, a leftover tomato, and leftover pasta. Totally tasty, but as I now look at the cooked spinach I am reminded of a friend who won't eat spinach because of a bad experience he had with it and the thought is making me vomit a little inside my mouth. Yuck.

OOOOoooo! New song of the day! I know I'm bad, but I swear I better about other things like boys and shoes, but maybe not majors since I did change that. But anyways here it is: The Naked and Famous - Young Blood.

Definitely not your grandmother's fellatio.

"I think all of us would rather have oral sex than throat cancer."

Yes, Mike I think we would. Especially early in the morning. Today in Journalism we discussed a photo that appeared on the cover of a Florida college newspaper of a guy performing cunnilingus on a scantily dressed woman. The photo caused a stir of controversy about whether or not it was relevant to the story of people possibly developing throat cancer after having oral sex with people who are infected with HPV. It sparked quite the debate in class about the boundaries in journalism and whether or not the story could have been sold without the photo. Now personally I think that the story was relevant to college students and I wouldn't have needed the photo to pick the paper up and read, but I don't see any reason that the newspaper should have been penalized for it. In fact I like the photo. Not for journalistic reasons, but because of the taboo subject matter given and the roles that were assigned to the man and woman. It's not you typical oral sex scene, well it is for most people but not the kind that gets printed often. It is rare that women get shown in a position of power in a sex scene. Very often its the woman performing the act on a man and the scene is very lewd and crude. I appreciated the photo chosen by the newspaper and the clean and powerful image that they produced. Oral sex, especially cunnilingus is still the naughty no-no for many  (silly) people and it was nice to see college students who have moved past a back of the bus lipstick game.

Remember to get yourself checked.

Outside of journalism, but still in the realm of writing, I have decided to make my fiction piece more pulpy and exaggerated. I got a lot of surprising feedback from my classmates. They loved the story and they want me to push the limits with it. I think tonight when I get back I'm going to revise another draft so I have a hard copy to give to My Hebrew Friend to go over for me. I think I'll just print him out a copy this time and let him write all over it. I found it most helpful when people wrote on their so I knew exactly where to go back and make changes with it.

An even worse title than my fiction piece.

I have The Carpenter's Superstar stuck in my head, but not the version by The Carpenters. It's the one done by Sonic Youth, the one people know from Juno when Jason Bateman gets all creepy on Ellen Page.

I just found out my journalism class is cancelled for tomorrow morning, which is both a good and a bad thing. Good because that class is getting annoying and draining and I've definitely come to the realization that while I have learned a lot about internet publication and multimedia presentation, I do not want to be a journalist. Sorry Aunt Sylvia, but you'll have to find another relation to follow in your footsteps. It's bad though because it now means I have more time to procrastinate working on my fiction piece that's due for workshop. I have to have fourteen copies to hand out in class so my classmates can tear it apart on Monday. I got a good start done before I went to work today and I only need another hour or so working at a solid pace to get a decent draft done for class. I just need to suck it up and do it.

Today practice was fantastic despite Lauren and I refusing to get out of the car and Lauren texting me a million times to make sure I would come get her at 5am. Thank god she texts me for a solid half hour before I get her otherwise I would just roll over and go back to sleep. Today Guy came and did a whole practice on skating. Not very technically challenging for me because of my background, but I definitely got a solid workout in. My body is soooo sore right now from skating on my butt Russian circles, but now everyone knows I can do a Shoot the Duck on both feet and ended up being demonstrator for half the drills. Not terrible because Guy and I ended up having a great chat about skating and how hockey is 90% skating and that everyone should start out with the intensive training that figure skaters go through. Most of the girls think that I'm naturally good on the ice, but they don't realize that I've been drilled and tested on cross-overs and edges for years and that I actually competed in events just for skating around the rink on my inside and outside edges. I had to put a lot of work, discipline, and muscle training into being able to do just half a lap of power pulls. The girls don't have to come close to what I do, but they need to realize that it takes a lot more to get even just good blade control than what they're giving now.

Rawr I wish my body didn't hurt so bad. Maybe the soreness will keep me awake long enough to finish my story or maybe I will just fall asleep ad wake up like a broke pretzel. We shall see...

Fruit of the Awesome.

Oh my God Mom! You don't want to read this, it's about boy's underwear! Alright you can read it, but remember this me and not Samantha so make sure you call her and remember to have "the talk" with her. You know which one I mean, the one about not stealing boy's underwear because college boys do even less laundry than me if they can help it.

But yeah. I has to buy a bunch of white undershirts for and since no woman actually wears these past the age of eleven I had to rummage around the mens undergarments section at Target. SCORE FOR SIDNEY!! Ladies (and Jon) let me tell you something... these things are amazing and so comfortable. If I could have my way I would be living in these and nothing else. The only complaint I have is that the v-neck is cut very narrow, more like a slit than a V. Actually that's what I did yesterday after work. I paraded around the apartment in my white cotton shirt and the white hipsters that Victoria's Secret stopped making (sad) and nothing else. I ate some of the meatballs that I got from Aunt Val and watched the rest of The Dark Knight. And then I remembered that I had left my window in my bedroom ope so when I went to do my homework I had to bundle back up and just fell asleep. Oh so comfy. Anyways boys you're so lucky with your underwear. Even your boxer shorts are comfy comfy comfy. I used to buy boyfriends boxers that would mysteriously disappear from their dresser drawers. Not that I don't mind the pretty lacy articles that I keep for myself, it's just sometimes they can be uncomfortable and not so wonderful feeling like yours are. So thank you menswear.

I have to write a fiction piece for workshop on Friday. Pure fiction is not my forte when it comes to writing. When it came to flat out lying to my mother when I was eight, yes. Now, not so much. I have a few class segments that I can pull from, but actually getting a finished piece is going to take some work. I still have two days to come up with rough draft so we'll see where it ends up.

If I haven't told, I'm telling you now. Watch Mystery Team. Netflix has it for instant streaming and I can guarantee you won't be disappointed. It's a low budget comedy by a great up and coming young comedy troupe. Donald Glover from Community stars in it as a member of the children's crime solving Mystery Team that comes across a double homicide!

A short one.

Today I had a reader demand that I write something today. I got a text saying: "write something new." It actually made me laugh out loud and if it had been anyone else I would have said go fuck yourself, but since it was from a good friend of mine I started thinking about some things that I should write about. It's true though, I haven't written since this weekend and it's certainly not because I didn't have anything to write about. I've just sort of had things creep up on me that needed to be tended to before I could write. I'm still hacking away and hopefully by Saturday I will be mostly caught up. At least I don't have the Praxis II like some people. You know how some people are just inherently good at teaching? Well I'm not. I'm also not inherently good at nurturing according to CharChar. Sorry if I still believe in the Not My Kid, Not My Problem policy. I do love My Little Ball of Laugh, there's certainly no other small child I would carry up Chestnut Hill without any chocolate schnecken.

Last week Professor Darlington came into my journalism class to talk about blogging because as part of the class we have to create our own group blogs. Darlington writes a cheese blog called Madame Fromage. It's a well-known blog in the food world and it's actually very interesting even if you don't know a thing about cheese. Food blog are some of the best and fastest growing blogs out there. Look at Vaynerchuk, the guy is brilliant. Except for the whole NY Jets thing. Her blog talk reminded me about how it's good to have some regular features if you aren't going to have a themed blog. On my tumblr I used to do pieces about books on a weekly basis. Sometimes I would even do movies or music. I think I'm going to move some of that to this blog, especially since I've been reading more. It's definitely been a slow writing week for me, but I hope that after this hectic weekend I should be back to more regular writing. Also if anyone wants to get drinks Friday call me. I'm going to need some after Deadman's Cellphone.

Hey Yonni!

Hey Yonni! Guess what! I'm not going to write anything tonight!

Into the academic wild.

This week has been the first week of what will have to be the rest of the next year and a half (that's right my life has become another cliche). Otherwise Lance is going to drag me out of here and I will end up a freaky hybrid of him and Alexander Supertramp, wander the world and working in the restaurant industry. Oooh maybe then someone will write the story about my tragic demise in some remote part of the world. Wouldn't that be thrilling? I think so! Previously I had been studying physics for the past billion years that I have been in Philadelphia, this fall I had a meltdown and now I am not studying physics. It was a good meltdown too. The slow smoldering kind that eats you away inside and develops trigger points until something silly sets you off. That's what happened to me. One day I was perfectly fine and the next I was sobbing my way across Lower Merion and My Hebrew Friend had wipe up the hot mess I brought into work with me.

As of now I'm learning about English and focusing on writing. Contrary to my parents' and most other people's belief I did not choose this because of a boy. Boys schmoys. I only really chose English because it is something I can do and will be able to graduate sooner than later. After seeing the pilot for Portlandia, the sooner I can get out to Portland, Oregon the better. At least for me, maybe not my mother. Other than Portland I have no real life plans anymore. I went from having the very last detail planned out for the next ten years to not knowing where I will be next week and what I will be doing apart from school and work. A friend once told me I had my whole life to experience sex and not to rush it. Since it is too late for the sex part (forgive me mom and mom's friends) I am going to apply it to life. I have my whole life to figure out what I want to do and where I want to go. Lance didn't even get a suit wearing job until he was thirty-six, so I see no real reason to settle down with anything or anyone, anytime soon. Go me!

On a lighter, more aesthetic note, My Hebrew Friend got a haircut and he looks smashing, especially with the beard. Much shorter than I have ever seen him, his hair is very pretty and fun to rub your hand over it. Of course I have always been partial to guys with shorter hair and beards, so I applaud you My Hebrew Friend and think you should embrace your pretty hair.

Currently I am watching Marie Antoinette. The scene where the lot of them are creating a ruckus in the field to see the sunrise is going to be me someday but instead of French royalty, I'll have Marg and maybe My Hebrew Friend is I can drag him away from The Jersey Shore for long enough.

Another familiar hot mess.
